Job Requirements/Description

Are you looking for part-time work during school term time that gives you the chance to serve your local community?

School Crossing Patrol Wardens are dedicated individuals who help keep children and their families safe on their journeys to and from school. They are an important part of encouraging active travel by children and their parents.

We are really keen to recruit to our priority areas S12 and S6 which includes Birley, Malin Bridge, Shooters Grove and Walkley Primary schools, but there are vacancies city wide which you can apply to.

If you are reliable, confident and have a positive attitude then we would love for you to apply to join our friendly team of School Crossing Patrol Wardens. No formal qualifications are needed, but you must be fit enough to carry the stop sign,  to see and hear traffic, and to walk briskly into and out of the road safely using an awareness of road safety during your shift. If you have got the people skills to deal with children, drivers, parents, and school staff, we will train you in the professional skills to confidently manage the traffic and a uniform is provided, an Enhanced DBS check is also carried out as you will be working with children.

As you are required as a regular and intrinsic part of your role, to speak to members of the public in English, you must be able to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English as required by The Immigration Act 2016.

To give yourself the best chance of an interview, when filling in the personal statement section of the application form make sure you address all the points on the person specification giving examples from previous jobs, or from your life experience if you can. You need to let us know -

  • Are you able to give clear spoken instructions to children and adults, and would understand what they might say to you?
  • How would you respond to incidents calmly?
  • How do you remain calm when facing a stressful situation?
  • Do you understand road use and have traffic awareness?
  • Can you work without direct supervision?
  • Are you reliable and punctual?
  • Are you able to stand and walk, with a crossing sign, for the duration of the shift and can you hear and see traffic hazards?
  • Would you be happy working outside in all weathers?
  • Are you happy to wear the uniform provided?

There are vacancies throughout Sheffield but we are particularly interested in recruiting to S6. Please note that the vacancy list may change following recruitment or retirement of patrols.
